Tigers general manager Al Avila announced the heartbreaking news with a statement released on Tuesday:
“All of us in the Tigers baseball family were shocked and saddened to learn that first base coach Kimera Bartee suddenly passed away on Monday at the age of 49,” he wrote.
“Throughout his time in our organization as both a player and coach, Kimera was known as a kind soul but intense competitor who did his best every day to elevate those around him to do great things.”
Avila added: “While Tigers fans got used to seeing him in the first base coach’s box, Kimera’s impact on our ballclub went far deeper and will be sorely missed. In speaking with Kimera’s father, Jerry Bartee, we offered our condolences and support to his family.
“The thoughts and prayers of everyone in the organization are with Kimera’s family and friends, and his memory and spirit will never be forgotten,” Al Avila wrote on Tuesday.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Kimera was visiting his father in Omaha, Nebraska, when he collapsed.
Kimera Anotchi Bartee was born on July 21, 1972, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was known as a professional baseball outfielder and coach for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball.
He played in MLB for the Cincinnati Reds, Tigers, and Colorado Rockies from 1996 to 2001. Bartee coached starting in 2017 for Philadelphia Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates before rejoining the Tigers in 2021.
Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 14th round of the 1993 MLB Draft, he made his Major League debut with the Detroit Tigers in April 1996 and appeared in his final game in August 2001.
Bartee played for the Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League in 1995. He was sent from the Baltimore Orioles to the Minnesota Twins in September 1995 as the player to be named later in the Scott Erickson trade.
In 2003 and 2004, Kimera patrolled the outfield for the Long Island Ducks of the ALPB, earning All-Star kudos and then an Atlantic League championship with the Ducks in 2004.
