Basemera Oliver, a single mother of three, drowned in the channel in industrial area on Friday while fleeing from KCCA law enforcement officers, who were conducting operations against hawking in the central business district. She died instantly.
The family of the 35 year is now demanding that KCCA takes care of the orphaned children whose mother’s death was triggered by the cruelty of law enforcement officers.
They were led by the deceased’s father, Patrick Kugonza, a resident of Kyenjojo who traveled to Kampala upon learning about the death of his daughter.
Kugonza led a group of family members in a meeting with KCCA officials saturday to discuss issues related to the tragedy and pleaded with KCCA to discipline its officers and induct them on how best to handle arrests.
KCCA officials promised to pronounce themselves on the demand after issuance of a police report on the cause of Basemera’s death.
The authority however gave the family five million Shillings to organize the burial. Kugonza said they are planning to transport the body to Kyenjojo today for burial scheduled for tomorrow in Ntuntu village, Ruhoko Parish, Nyantungo Sub County.
