R. Kelly, a famed R&B artist, was given a 30-year jail term on Wednesday for his role in a decades-long scheme to lure and recruit young girls and women for sex. Learn more in-depth about R. Kelly in this article below.
American songwriter-record producer Robert Sylvester Kelly professionally known as R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison as he faces conviction for racketeering and eight counts of violating the Mann Act, which prohibits transporting people across state lines for prostitution, reports ‘Variety’.
Kelly has been in jail since July of 2019; 45 witnesses testified for the government. As per ‘Variety’, he still faces child pornography and obstruction of justice charges in Chicago, as well as charges in state courts in Illinois and Minnesota.
Kelly, one of the most successful hitmakers of the 1990s and early 2000s, was found guilty of all nine counts against him in September, after a six-week trial revealed how he had used employees and intermediaries to lure fans and hopeful singers into sexually abusive and controlling conditions, including locking them in rooms without food or access to a bathroom for days.
The singer has sold over 75 million records worldwide.
Three Grammy Awards were awarded to Robert for the song “I Believe I Can Fly.” He has written, produced, and remixed songs, singles, and albums for numerous artists.
R Kelly has had difficulty reading and comprehending words due to a dyslexia diagnosis. According to Jennifer Bonjean and the New York Post, Kelly is “effectively illiterate.”
Federal prosecutors had asked for a sentence “in excess of 25 years”, reflecting Kelly’s continued danger to the public and apparent lack of remorse for using his fame to sexually and emotionally abuse alleged victims, many of them underaged.
Kelly, who wore black eyeglasses and a khaki shirt, largely kept his head down during the hearing, according to the Times, occasionally looking up at the judge or a witness. Allegations of Kelly’s abuse of underaged girls followed him throughout his career, first arising in the early 1990s.
Kelly’s attorney — Jennifer Bonjean, who also represented Bill Cosby in his successful overturn of sexual assault conviction last year — argued for the minimum sentence of no more than 10 years in prison, even though the singer had been convicted of scheming over decades to recruit women and underaged girls and men for sex, claiming that his own experience as an abused child could have caused his “hypersexuality” later in life.
Following R Kelly’s trial, his attorney Jennifer Bonjean brought up his lack of literacy. She stated that she had to tell Kelly some of the sentencing later.
Kelly’s reading problems have previously been discussed in the media, especially when they came up during his 2019 trial.
According to The Guardian, Kelly didn’t reply to a lawsuit in May because his attorney claimed he couldn’t read.
Kelly’s lack of literacy has been often claimed by R Kelly’s legal team.
R Kelly got cleared of more than “a dozen allegations of child pornography” in 2008. According to the New York Times, the singer was on trial for the first time in Illinois.
Robert repeatedly dodged the law over the previous few years. He did so by saying he could not read.
After 14 years, Kelly is accused of sexual assault and may do 30 years in federal prison.
R Kelly will go on trial one more time in Chicago on August 15, 2022. According to the New York Times, he is charged federally with creating child pornography and enticing children into sex acts.
Along with his former workers, Kelly will stand trial again in the Northern District of Illinois in June 2022.
Kelly was charged with producing evidence of child sexual assault and conspiring with colleagues to fraudulently get his 2008 acquittal.

After a six-week trial in Brooklyn, New York, Kelly, who had fought against all accusations, was found guilty on all nine counts.
Robert wore a grey prison uniform and did not seem to respond while his punishment was declared.
Due to ongoing charges against him, he decided not to speak out before being sentenced.
In Chicago, the singer is scheduled to appear in court in August on allegations of child pornography and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
