Darrell S. Freeman Sr., a self-made millionaire who served as a mentor and benefactor for aspiring Black entrepreneurs, died Tuesday after a “serious illness,” his family announced on social media. He was 57.

With an active Linkedin page, it says that he was the executive chairman of Zycron for over 30 years. Even though he sold the company in 2017, an article says that Darrell S. Freeman sold one of Nashville’s top information technology consulting firms in a deal worth more than $20 million, around 25 years after founding Zycron Inc. right out of college.

Zycron is currently part of BG Staffing Inc., one of the country’s biggest and fastest-growing temporary staffing firms, based in Plano, Texas.

 

What Happened To Darrell Freeman From Nashville?

Businessman Darrell Freeman from Nashville passed away on Tuesday, his family announced in a statement. According to a family spokesman, he was 57 years old.

However, the cause of his death has not been established or made public.

The family stated that the man passed away on the evening of June 28, 2022, after succumbing to a serious illness. They kindly requested our prayers and their privacy as they navigated this challenging situation.

In a statement early this morning, Freeman’s family said:

“Our beloved father and husband suffered from a serious illness that he succumbed to on the evening of June 28, 2022. As we navigate this unknown territory and difficult time, we ask for your prayers and privacy.”

A graduate and board member of Middle Tennessee State University and former board chair for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, Freeman was known for dogged persistence and a commitment to education.

“He was a lion of a leader, and his impact will be felt for generations,” Nashville Chamber CEO Ralph Schulz said in a statement.”

“Darrell was a mentor to many and was passionate about education and the doors it opened for him and could open for others.”

One of the Twitteratti’s says, “He was the ONLY Black person on the current MTSU Board of Trustees. The only one to speak up on disparities amongst the Black population and implement strategies to raise Black (especially male) graduation rates.”

Freeman, the first in his family to go to college, built tech company Zycron Inc. and sold it in 2017 for more than $20 million. After that, he invested thousands of hours and millions of dollars to help young, disadvantaged people go to college and budding Black entrepreneurs succeed.

“I spent the majority of my life getting money,” Freeman told The Tennessean in February.

“I want to spend the majority of the rest of my life giving. I want to use my voice, my reputation, my resources to find people and help them become better.”

Freeman had previously held the positions of board member and chair for the Middle Tennessee State University as well as the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.

He was formerly inducted into the Nashville Entrepreneurs’ Hall of Fame, and Fisk University recently announced that it would collaborate with him on a new business incubator and innovation center.

The entrepreneur completed his education at Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology in 1987. His career began as a regent at the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) in 2012.

Further, he went on to work as a lead director at American Addiction Centers a year later. After working there for six years, he co-founded a Reliant Bank. Presently, it has been 30 years for him as an executive chairman at Zycron, and 15 years as the chairman of the board at Pinnacle Construction Partners, LLC., three years as a board member at Cross Country Healthcare.

The man has his hand in various sectors and was doing quite well for himself. It is unfortunate that he could not continue achieving greater heights.
