Sir David Amess, Conservative MP has died after being stabbed at his constituency surgery in Essex.
Police said a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after the attack at a church in Leigh-on-Sea.
They said they recovered a knife and were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said “our hearts are full of shock and sadness” at the loss of “one of the kindest” people in politics.
Who was Sir David Amess?
Sir David Anthony Andrew Amess was a British politician. A member of the Conservative Party, he was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1983, first for Basildon and from 1997 for Southend West.
A long-term and vocal Eurosceptic, he supported Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum and was a supporter of Leave Means Leave, a pro-Brexit campaign.
Raised as a Roman Catholic, he was known politically as a social conservative and as a prominent campaigner against abortion and on animal welfare issues.
He was also known for his championing of Southend, including a long-running campaign to win city status for the town.
On 15 October 2021, Amess was stabbed multiple times while holding his constituency surgery, and died at the scene of the attack.

The victim who represents Southend West was attacked on Friday afternoon where he was meeting constituents. It is learned that a man entered into the Tory MP’s constituency surgery and stabbed him severely.
Witnesses said Armed police have were seen at the scene, and as reported by the Southend Echo, the road around there has been shut down. Also, a considerable emergency presence was spotted in the surrounding location, besides a police helicopter overhead.
A spokesman of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle, stated, “This is an incident that will send shockwaves across the parliamentary community and the whole country.”
He added he was shocked and very distressed by the death of a “lovely man” and announced they should examine MPs’ security in the following days.

“He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene. A 25-year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder, and a knife was recovered.”
Sir David is the second MP to be killed in the past five years, following the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016.
