Owen Hargreaves highlighted similarities between Manchester City ace Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund, on BT Sport.
Foden and Bellingham went toe-to-toe yesterday as City knocked out Dortmund in the Champions League quarter finals.
Both of England’s bright sparks shone under the European lights.
Bellingham opened the scoring for BVB after 15 minutes with a composed finish past Ederson. At that point, the Germans were going through on away goals.
After Riyad Mahrez equalised from the penalty spot, Foden struck a beautiful strike into the bottom corner late in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory on the night and a 4-2 aggregate win.
It was a glimpse into the very exciting future in store for English football, with two Young Lions shining just weeks before Gareth Southgate names his squad for the European Championship.
Hargreaves was happy to draw comparisons between the pair and said: “They are similar in that they are both really special. They are both really unique, they are humble, they are great players.
“They look like they love the game. I think they will probably follow similar paths. Jude is a bit younger.
“Phil has risen to the task every time he’s been asked. Think about that goal he scored in the first leg and then again tonight.
“Everybody loves him, because every time he touches the ball something happens. He can play in so many positions.
“We are blessed to have a young player like Phil Foden. And then he’s doing on this stage. And Jude Bellingham.
“England’s future is incredibly bright. Let’s just hope these guys can get into the team this summer.”
Both Foden and Bellingham will be aiming to be named into Southgate’s squad.
Foden’s spot in the 23 looks all but assured and he has now scored 13 goals in 41 appearances this season.
Bellingham has impressed during his maiden campaign with Dortmund, having played 39 times across all competitions.
He is battling with the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Kalvin Phillips for a spot in the squad – but neither of them are stealing the show in Champions League quarter-finals like he is.
If Jordan Henderson still isn’t fit for inclusion, then all three midfielders will expect to be in the squad, and Bellingham’s recent Champions League displays will have done his chances of a start this summer no harm at all.
