Niantic has temporarily widened the trade range in Pokémon Go, meaning that it’s easier to trade with friends in the same geographical location.
This is good news for players with lots of friends in their general area that might be unable to travel – for example, due to a local lockdown or attempts to shelter in place.
The current test doesn’t last forever, but Niantic has suggested that, depending on feedback from the trade distance change, the company might make a more long-term adjustment to Pokémon Go in the future.
What is the maximum trade range in Pokémon Go?
From now until November 16th at 10:00 PT (13:00 ET, 18:00 GMT), the trade range for Pokémon Go has been extended to 12km, meaning that players can trade with friends provided they are closer than this distance.
Bear in mind that it is only possible to trade between players on your friends list, so this won’t function like a local version of the Global Trading System in mainline Pokémon games – the game won’t pair you up with a trading partner. Luckily, there are enough local Pokémon Go online Facebook and Discord groups for most metropolitan areas that it shouldn’t be too hard to find a trading partner if you live in a built up area.
Bear in mind that the trade range increase will only last until Monday, so it’s important to take advantage of it while it lasts – making this another compelling reason to play Pokémon Go this weekend.
How to trade Pokémon with friends in Pokémon Go
Trades are conducted the same way as always: players should tap on their Friends list (found by tapping the player icon on the bottom left side of the map, then swiping right), then tap on Trade.
The game will then detect whether the two players are within 12km of each other. Under ordinary circumstances, trades are only permissable between players within one hundred metres of each other, so this new distance should make local trading a lot easier.
It remains to be seen whether Niantic will make a permanent adjustment to the trade range in Pokémon Go, but if this initial test goes well, players may be able to get a lot more out of the trading mechanic within the game.
