KAMPALA. If there is anything to scribble in bold about the second edition of the Entebbe Singleton Match play Challenge, it is the lady participants.
Few would have imagined to see two female pairings – Peace Kabasweka and Sheila Kesiime as well as Irene Nakalembe and Eva Magala – make it to the semifinals of this exciting knockout competition on Saturday. For those that underestimated them, it was the case of a poisoned chalice. Nakalembe and Magala continued their run as they eliminated Collins Mwesigwa and Eliaz Katwebaze 2/1 (2-up with a hole to spare) at the par-71 course.
And little could stop them from dancing to Fik Fameika’s jams at the prize giving ceremony punctuated by evergreen comedian Patrick ‘Salvador’ Idringi and the Las Vegas theme.
“It was very tough,” Nakalembe stated. Indeed, they were 1-down on Hole No.10 but levelled on the 12th. The ladies then charged to go 2-up after No.15 but Katwebaze and Mwesigwa halved the deficit on No.16. On the par-4 No.17, Irene strolled to the fairways as Katwebaze and Mwesigwa headed to the bush on the right which eventually sorted the contest.
Kabasweka and Kesiime were even better on the day as they beat Ronnie Kasirye & Robert Busingye 4/3 on the green of par-3 No.16. Meanwhile, Allan Muhereza held the record for the only player to reach Singleton quarterfinals but him and partner Michael Tumusiime were beaten 2/1 by Paul Kaheru and Joseph Bagabo.
“Having such a statistic then you lose is the more painful thing,” Muhereza said. “But this is sport, they were better.”
But the biggest winners of the day were Joseph Mawejje and Charles Mubiru who whitewashed Vincent Asiimwe and Francis Otim 6/5.
