Arsenal have ‘had a £17million bid for David Luiz rejected by Chelsea’, according to reports in France.

The 31-year-old Brazilian is out of favour at Chelsea under Antonio Conte and with the Italian’s future at the club no closer to a resolution, Luiz is said to be assessing his options for the new season.

Le10Sport report that new Arsenal boss Unai Emery views Luiz as a viable target to help boost his defensive options but the initial bid was rejected.

Luiz made just 16 appearances in all competitions under Antonio Conte this season having been sidelined for large spells through injury.

Having played a nightmare role in Brazil’s 7-1 defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup – coupled with a lack of game time at Chelsea – Luiz was not selected by Brazil boss Tite for the World Cup in Russia.

His omission is a boost for suitors, however, but it remains unclear whether Arsenal will return with an improved offer.

Defence is a key area of concern for Emery with veteran right back Stephan Lichtsteiner his first signing since joining the club.

The Gunners are also said to be closing on a deal for Borussia Dortmund centre back Sokratis Papastathopoulos for a similar fee to the Luiz bid.
