Uganda’s richest man Sudhir Ruperalia has hired three upscale Kampala law firms to defend him against a case filed by MMAKS Advocates for Bank of Uganda (BOU) last week in what promises to be biggest civil case in Museveni’s era.
BOU sued Sudhir alleging that him and his associates including Godfrey Kirumira, Jitendra Sanghani, and Rasiklal Chhotalal Kantaria, a prominent Kenyan banker participated in massive fraud cause huge financial losses.
BOU wants court to compel Sudhir to refund Sh410b at an interest rate of 12% per year. The bank also wants Sudhir to refund sh55b in unpaid NSSF contributions.
Kampala Associated Advocates (KAA), Katende, Ssempebwa and Company (KATS) and Magna Advocates will lead Sudhir’s defense.
KAA and KATS regularly ranked among the top five in Uganda boast such high pedigree counsel like Prof. Ssempebwa, Harvard trained Katende, former Solicitor General Peter Kabatsi, former director of civil litigation Joseph Masiko, and so on.
The diminutive but highly ballistic Joseph Kyazze of Magna Advocates, the last person to receive the prestigious Chief Justice’s award completes the team.
Sudhir has kept a low profile since the filing of the case. Any attempts to reach him have been futile.
