A community based organisation in Masindi district has partnered with Hoima Blood Bank to mobilise the public to donate blood following the crisis that hit Masindi Hospital two months ago.
Early this week, Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS), under the Ministry of Health has entered a partnership with National Social Security Fund to hold a six-day blood donation drive aimed at increasing the stock of blood and supply in medical health facilities in the country.
The acute shortage of blood in the country has continued to paralyze work at the various health facilities.
The latest to be hard-it is the Uganda Heart Institute which has been forced reduced the number of patients seeking surgery due to lack of blood.
The Institute’s Executive Director Dr.John Omagino says the units of blood they are receiving from the blood bank cannot not satisfy the high demand for the same.
Earlier, there were reports that the Uganda Cancer Institute too had suspended major operations due to blood shortage.
Authorities at Nakasero Blood Bank have blamed the shortage on the fact that students who form the biggest percentage of blood donors are currently on holiday.
