Police has this Afternoon arrested twelve members of the Democratic Party (DP) including the party president Norbert Mao after foiling their attempt to match to parliament.
The 11 were picked a few metres from the DP offices at City house as they had just started the planned match against the constitutional amendment bill seeking lifting of presidential age limit.
Addressing journalists shortly before the arrest, the DP leader had urged Speaker Rebecca Kadaga to be fair and throw out the presidential age limit bill whose report by the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee was expected to be tabled in Parliament today (Tuesday, December 12).
“We say to Speaker Kadaga today, ‘you have a chance to redeem your tattered image. Do not be soft like a sausage,” Mao said.
The eleven others arrested with Mao include; Ronald Muyini Ssebana, Dr Mayambala Kiwanuka, Robert Mukooza, David Musiiri, Jamie Isiko, Musa Ntege, Richard Nvanungi, Alex Ochaki, Edwardo Kahiigi, Caleb Tumuharwe and Bashir Bisaso.
According to the Kampala metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire confirmed the arrests saying they were already recording statements.
“We are recording statements from the arrested suspects as we continue with investigation,” Owoyesigire said.
The 12 suspects are being held on tentative charges of holding an unlawful possession.
A reliable source who is working on the file revealed that the rest would spend the night in custody while Mao would eventually be released.
Detectives handling the case have already contacted the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) with intent of having the 11 suspects charging them at Buganda Road Magistrate Court.
Mao had earlier this morning launched the Red ribbon week intended to mobilize the public against the parliamentary proceedings intended to amend article 102b of the constitution which provides for presidential age limit.
The age limit bill being championed by Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi seeks to scrap presidential age limits for persons aspiring for the Presidency of the country.
Currently, a person is not legible to aspire for the highest office on the land of they are below 35 and above 75 years. This means President Yoweri Museveni will not be able to contest for the presidency in 2021 if the Constitution is not amended.
