Prof. Barnabus Nawangwe has been confirmed by Makerere University Chancellor Prof Ezra Suruma as the next Vice chancellor (VC) of the institution, to replace Prof John Ddumba Ssentamu, whose term ends next week.
Prof Nawangwe was recommended as the next VC by the University Council after scoring 15 votes out of 21 votes beating Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba and Prof. Edward Kirumira.
Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba who got four votes once served as the VC of Makerere University whereas Prof Edward Kirumira, the Principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, who bagged two votes never got the chance to be one.
Makerere University Council and Senate on March 9 constituted a five-member committee led by Ms Ovonji Odida, which named the incoming VC in July.
According to sources, Prof Nawangwe yesterday received his appointment letter from Prof Suruma as he is slated to officially take over office from Prof. Ddumba next Thursday.
According to the Universities and Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001, the University Chancellor confirms the appointment of the Vice Chancellor on the recommendation of the University Council.
Prof Charles Wana-etyem, the University Council chairperson confirmed the development.
“It is true Prof Ddumba is handing over office to the new VC next week on August 31 and the date for the installation of Prof Nawangwe will be communicated,” Prof Wana-etyem said.
