Contraceptive pills are commonly used by women for birth control due easiness of administration, their effectiveness among others. A single pill may contain either oestrogen, progesterone or both hormones (combined oral contraceptive) which are also found in the body. They inhibit ovulation and create an environment not suitable for implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus (uterus)

Apart from birth control, here are other benefits of oral contraceptive pills you probably did not know

  1. Regulation of the menstrual cycle. This is mostly applies to women who have irregular periods due to hormonal imbalance
  2. Reduction of abdominal pain during periods
  3. Reduction of menstrual blood loss. This however may be in combination with slight bleeding in between periods (spotting)
  4. Relieving symptoms of endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to that found in the lining of the uterine cavity (endometrium) is found elsewhere outside the uterus like in the ovaries, bladder, chest or even the brain. These tissues also bleed during menstrual periods
  5. Offering some degree of protection against ovarian cancer
  6. Hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women to treat symptoms caused by estrogen depletion in menopause
  7. Treatment of acne and hirsutism in some women. Hirsutism is a condition characterized by excessive hair growth on the skin
  8. Relieving symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, a condition characterized by abnormal mood changes, headache, abnormal pain, appetite changes etc.
