The Education Ministry and the National Identification and Registration Authority will, on 29th May, start the mass registration of all students below 16 years. The exercise is scheduled to take three months and estimated to cost UGX53bn
The exercise has already received 25 billion shillings and a further 28 billion will be availed next financial year that starts in JultAccording to the State Minister for Primary Education Rosemary Seninde, the exercise will weed out ghost pupils and clean the education sector.
According to the ministry, the parents and guardians of the children will facilitate the documentation needed for registration. The ministry says that for children whose parents or guardians have not got the National identification cards, their children will not be registered.
The ministry also says that the National ID will be a requirement for all candidates sitting for exams to avoid impersonation.
The country has approximately 10.8 million school-going children. The details were announced at a Press conference in Kampala.
