The US President reportedly told senior security officials that he wanted to dramatically expand the US nuclear weapons stockpile.
But speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump denied the reports, saying an increase in the stockpile of nukes is “totally unnecessary”.
Instead, he called for the “modernisation and total rehabilitation” of the US nuclear arsenal.
As of 2017, the US is currently estimated to possess 6,800 nuclear warheads, of which 2,800 are awaiting decommission.
His defence secretary, James Mattis, also rubbished NBC News reports Trump had called for an increase in nuclear weapons arsenal.
He said: “Recent reports that the President called for an increase in the US nuclear arsenal are absolutely false.
“This kind of erroneous reporting is irresponsible.”
Nuclear experts told CNN that substantially growing the US nuclear arsenal is “absurd” and “inconceivable”.
