Tony Ornato is the Assistant Director of the Office of Training within the United States Secret Service. He has denied claims former president Donald Trump “lunged” at a secret service agent – but who is the USSS assistant director?
Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified during a congressional hearing on Tuesday (June 28) that she was told former president Donald Trump became “irate” when secret service agents refused to drive him to the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Ornato is a well-known Assistant Director of the Office of Training in the United States Secret Service. In particular, he has served in law enforcement for more than three decades. Further, he joined the United States Secret Service in 1997.
In addition, he has worked in multiple divisions, including the Presidential Protective Division, Protective Operations, Criminal Investigations, and secret service. He has been working to manage training for all covert service personnel at the current date.
He also served in the Office of Investigation as the SES Deputy Assistant Director, where he had worked as the Special Agent in charge of the Presidential Protective Division in the past years.
AIDE Claims TRUMP ‘LUNGED’ At Driver
According to NPR, Trump wanted to be taken to the Capitol on January 6 following a speech in which he called on supporters to march there.
However, according to Hutchinson’s account, he was told by Robert Engel, the secret service agent in charge, it wasn’t safe to go to the Capitol.
Hutchinson claimed she was told by Ornato that Trump screamed: “I’m the f**king president. Take me up to the Capitol now.” She further claimed Trump “reached up toward the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel” and “lunged” at Engle.
Hutchinson also claimed House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy contacted her during the rally and asked her to make sure Trump “didn’t come to the Capitol”.
TONY ORNATO DENIES ‘LUNGING’ CLAIMS
After Hutchinson’s testimony, a secret service official “familiar with the matter” told CNN Ornato denies telling Hutchinson the former president “grabbed the wheel or an agent on his detail”.
Engel and Ornato have both testified to the January 6 Committee behind closed doors but their statements were not used in Tuesday’s hearing.
Trump also denied the claims via his Truth Social account, on which he wrote: “Her [Hutchinson’s] fake story that I tried to grab the steering wheel of the White House limousine in order to steer it to the Capitol building is ‘sick’ and fraudulent.”
