Ross Mitchell Anyon was a New Zealand Potter who had a strong and positive advocate for culture and heritage as a District Councilor.
In April 2015, while working in his Taupo Quay building, Mr Mitchell-Anyon fell 12m. He suffered multiple skull fractures, 10 broken ribs and a broken pelvis, and spent time in a coma in intensive care at Wellington Hospital.
After that he had six months’ rehabilitation at an acquired brain injury unit in Porirua. He was able to return to his Whanganui house in November last year.
Shortly afterward his wife Bobbi, who had looked after him devotedly, had a major stroke herself. She is now in Auckland, where she has a daughter and sister, being cared for in an institution.
Anyon was one of the most experienced people in this field as he has had an active presence for many years. Apart from that, Anyon was also known for his local political activism, antagonistic attitude toward council controllers, and being a straightforward community commentator in the local press.

Ross Mitchell-Anyon was born in Orange, NSW, Australia in 1954 and came to New Zealand in 1964.
His interest in pottery was initiated at Wanganui Intermediate School but it was at Palmerston North Teachers’ College he was able to begin working with clay under the tuition of Stan Jenkins. He completed his Teaching Diploma in 1975 and by 1980 he had become a full time potter.
It was not until the 1970s and 1980s that tertiary institutions started offering ceramics through visual or applied arts qualifications. Before this, the only way to learn how to pot outside of teachers’ training college was through adult education programmes at summer schools or weekend and night classes.
From the mid-1980s he taught at the Wanganui Community College, later the Polytechnic, now UCOL. Within the Diploma of Ceramic Design and Production course Martin Poppelwell and Paul Maseyk were two of his now best-known students.
Ross has been a strong and positive advocate for culture and heritage as a District Counsellor and was personally instrumental in saving some of Whanganui’s heritage buildings.
