Tony Melton Death – It is with a heavy heart that our office announces the passing of our beloved agent Tony Melton. Tony went to his Heavenly Father yesterday afternoon.
Our love and prayers are with Tony’s family and each of you that has been impacted by Tony’s humor, knowledge, and devotion to the community. He was famously called the encyclopedia of how to grow food in the Pee Dee.
Who Was Tony Melton?
Tony Melton, a respected name in the agriculture field, has shocked the internet with his untimely death news. Tony was a giant of a man in the field of agriculture in the pee dee and across the state.
He had set a perfect example for society with his actions. The two-time retired Horticulture Extension agent was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor for his effort.
Melton graduated from McBee High School and Clemson University twice, once with a bachelor’s degree and again with a master’s degree.
He has been working on farms in some fashion since he was 4 years old.
“Started picking cotton with Granddaddy. He made me a sack out of flour sacks and a way to put it over my shoulder, and when I was 3-4 years old I was picking cotton into that sack with Mama,” Melton said in a way that you could see the smile over the phone line. “Granddaddy was paying us 10 cent a pound at the beginning.”
“When I was 5-6 years old and I started picking butter beans and he was taking them to the farmers market in Columbia and selling them for $12-$15 a bushel — and we’re still getting $15 a bushel for butter beans,” Melton said.
Mechanization, he said, is what has allowed the price to remain the same over the years.
“By the way, I’d love to have me some butter beans, I may have to go down to the farmers market here and get some butter beans,” Melton said. “Speckled butter beans.”
“I started from there working in the yards and I helped Kent McLeod’s mama — she was kinda like a second mamma to me — and I helped her in her yard to landscape,” Melton said. “At 10 years old I could start in the packing shed with the McLeods. Kent McLeod is the hardest-working man in the face of the earth that I know of.”

Tony Melton, the Horticulture agent, has died at the age of 64 in Darlington, South Carolina. According to the obituary notice, the wise gentleman passed away on the 2nd of April, battling out a serious illness.
In a December column Melton announced that he had stage 4 non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver.
Due to his health condition, Tony was forced to take retirement twice in his beautiful career.
He was graduated from Clemson University and worked there for more than four decades of his life. The university pass on their deepest condolences to one of their loyal and high-spirited human being.

Tony was married to his love interest, Mitzi. The couple was born to be together, listening to their small talks during the interview. In a phone interview, Tony expressed his thankfulness to his wife.
He believed his wife had supported him through the thick and thin of his life. The two collectively worked together and were often found happy. Presently, Mitzi is in total shock as she has just lost the love of her life.
Tony was married to his ex-wife, whose name is still a big question mark on the internet. The previous marriage of the Horticulture agent was blessed with a son and daughter as a child.
Tony had five children who he claimed didn’t come back after their graduation. He used to enjoy his free time with 11 adorable grandchildren.
