How do you pronounce Cary Elwes?
The name Cary is of Latin origin, meaning “pleasant stream”. Elwes shares it actor Cary Grant and philosopher Cary Wolfe.
As a surname, Cary’s alternatives are “Carey” and “Carye”. “Cary” itself is of Welsh and Cornish origin, per SurnameDB. It is a variant of the locational name “Carew”, a sort of portmanteau of “caer” (fort) and “rhiw” (hill). Depending on where you’re from and what accent you have, different pronunciations will feel more or less natural. Whether you elongate the “a” or shorten it, as in “Kerry”, shouldn’t matter.
But what about “Elwes”? The family name Elwes apparently first appears in records in Nottinghamshire, in the 13th century. Per Everything2, “Cary Elwes himself says [you pronounced it] ‘like Elvis but with a W’”. So, “EL-wiss”, or thereabouts.
