Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is now available on PS4, Xbox One, Series X, and PC, and it’ll be available on PS5 as soon as the next-gen console launches. The reviews for the game have been largely positive with some dubbing it “a Viking story of faith and family,” but a lot of fans have only one question: which gender is canon? Here you’ll find out which gender is canon in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and you’ll also discover who you should pick between male and female Eivor.
Dubbed a “roaring bloodied success with a true heart,” Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has largely been praised for its recreation of an England which is only slightly less civil and more barbaric than modern day during lockdown. However, aside from its open-world and surprisingly joyous quests, the lead character has also been praised by many.
Lots of people are asking which gender is canon, and below you’ll discover whether you should pick male or female Eivor.
Which gender is canon in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s narrative director has said that both genders are canon.
However, while both genders are said to be canon in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, there is a prequel graphic novel by Dark Horse which solely focuses on female Eivor.
In addition to the Dark Horse graphic novel, there were also claims awhile ago that the game was supposed to only star a female but that Ubisoft executives insisted on the inclusion of a male.
This was because of a supposed belief that a “woman alone wouldn’t have sold,” but narrative director Darby McDevitt refuted some of the claims on Reddit by saying that the game’s story was conceived with male and female in mind.
Kassandra is recognised as the canon main character in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and it does seem likely that female Eivor will be regarded as the same in the future thanks to the Dark Horse comic.
In addition, the Let the Animus choice also suggests that she is the canonical pick.
Should you play as male or female Eivor in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?
You can pick and play as either male or female Eivor for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
However, if you’re not comfortable picking between male or female Eivor for your Assassin’s Creed Valhalla playthrough, you can either play as both at anytime or Let the Animus choose.
You can change between genders at anytime during the game, but letting the Animus choose does lend credence to the belief that woman is canon.
Per Eurogamer, the Let the Animus choose option will make you play as female Eivor expect for certain scenarios during Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s story.
You will only play as male when visiting mythical worlds while focusing on Eivor’s bond with Odin, so – again – this suggests female is canonical as Let the Animus choose is default and most of your playtime will be in the body of a woman.
