Glasgow Rangers loanee Jamie Murphy has handed the Ibrox side a huge boost in the Premiership title race.
The Rangers winger’s time at Ibrox may effectively over following his loan-to-sign summer switch to Hibernian, but he still indirectly delivered for his parent club on Saturday.
Murphy was named in the Hibs starting XI as they welcomed Celtic to Easter Road, and played a huge role in giving his team a two-goal lead against the Premiership’s second-placed side.
Following a goalless first half, the hosts were awarded a penalty shortly after the restart.
Although Scott Bain saved Kevin Nisbet’s spot kick, Murphy was on hand to convert the rebound on 52 minutes.
Just seven minutes later, the two players combined once again to double their lead, Murphy heading into the path of Nisbet to fire home in off the far post.
Sadly for Hibs, mistakes at the back led to Celtic clawing their way back into the game and earning a point.
Odsonne Edouard scored a penalty of his own following Paul McGinn’s handball and Diego Laxalt rifled home an injury-time equaliser following a Leigh Griffiths free kick.
Although Hibs couldn’t finish the job, Steven Gerrard’s charges remain eight points clear of their rivals – who have a game in hand – and could go 11 clear with victory over Aberdeen at Ibrox tomorrow.
Needless to say, plenty of Bears were quick to praise Murphy following his heroics against the Hoops:
