Kevin Campbell has told Highbury Squad that Joe Willock is a striker’s dream to play with, and hinted that the Arsenal youngster evokes memories of Aaron Ramsey with the runs he makes.
Willock may have been hoping to really kick on this term after appearing in 29 Premier League games last season. However, he has largely had to wait for Europa League ties to come around for chances under Mikel Arteta.
He has made the most of the game-time he has enjoyed in the competition. The 21-year-old has scored twice and provided an assist to put the Gunners on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages.
It looks to be a matter of time before he gets to make his first Premier League appearance this season. And Campbell insisted that he could be the kind of player who gets the best out of Alexandre Lacazette.
“Joe Willock, I am telling you now, you can see that he’s starting to grow into that role when he comes into the team now,” he told Highbury Squad. “He’s a striker’s dream. Honestly, when he plays and with Lacazette, he would make Lacazette’s job 50 percent easier, because he runs beyond, a bit like how Ramsey used to. Willock’s got energy to burn, he runs behind. It’s very difficult to pick him up.
“I like this young player. He’s another one, you don’t ever see him moan, groan or anything. He gets on with it. He gets in the team and he’s always involved in goals.”
TBR View: Willock will surely end wait for top flight appearance in near future
Arsenal have 12 fixtures to navigate through before the turn of the year. Eight of those are Premier League games. So you would imagine that Willock will get another chance in the top flight sooner rather than later.
Of course, it will not be easy for the youngster to force his way into Arteta’s plans on a consistent basis. Arsenal have plenty of depth in the middle of the park.
But if he can impress in the league in the same way he has done in Europe when a chance does come his way, perhaps it may not be too long before Willock secures a prominent role in that midfield pecking order once again.
