Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg certainly wasn’t one of the high-profile signings made by Tottenham in the summer transfer window, but he’s arguably been the most important in the opening months of the season.
Spurs signed him from Southampton for £15million (BBC) back in August and he’s quickly established himself as a nailed-on starter, playing every minute in the eight Premier League games so far.
The 25-year-old Dane looks like a big favourite with manager Jose Mourinho and is helping to knit everything together.
He is a defensive midfielder that anchors the backline with his reading of the play and aggressive tackling, plus he’s composed and forward thinking in his passing.
Ex-Spurs man and pundit Jermaine Jenas was spot on with his comments last season when discussing Hojbjerg.
Jenas understood why Spurs were being linked with him back in February before his summer transfer and he was spot on about how much of a leader he was on the pitch for Southampton, something that he’s now showing in North London.
“He seems to be a big leader within the ranks. In the league game at St Mary’s [against Spurs] he bossed the midfield. He has that authority, that real kind of combative nature to his game and I think that’s why Spurs were looking at him,” Jenas said.
Hojbjerg is not the most eye-catching player alongside superstar teammates such as Harry Kane and Heung-Min, but he does such valuable work in the midfield that allows others to thrive and it’s remarkable how quickly he’s settled.
He is certainly looking like captain material already just a few months into his Spurs career and he’s making his £15million transfer signing look like a genius piece of business.
