Manchester United and England goalkeeper Dean Henderson has explained that Tottenham counterpart Joe Hart has been a huge help for him so far in his career.
Henderson, 23, made his senior international debut for England on Thursday night in the 3-0 friendly victory against Republic of Ireland at Wembley Stadium.
The young shot-stopper is back at Old Trafford currently acting as the number two behind David Gea, after performing superbly well last season in the Premier League on loan at Sheffield United.
Henderson is now battling Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope for the England number one position, and he’s claimed that ex-Three Lions goalkeeper Hart has massively helped him in his development.
33-year-old Hart was once the number one for the national team and he joined Spurs in the summer to provide cover for Hugo Lloris.
He’s added some real experience to the Spurs dressing room and has the winning mentality that is rubbing off on players, plus he’s been a real vocal presence in the games he’s played this season in Europe and cup competitions.
“Playing against Joe Hart who was my idol growing up because he obviously had the England number one shirt when I was a young boy and that was obviously something I wanted to achieve one day. This was a special moment when I played against him,” Henderson said, as quoted by England’s official Youtube account.
“He gave me his number and we got texting from there. He’s been great for me. He’s given me a lot of advice along the way.”
It says a lot about Hart’s character that he’s been a mentor for upcoming English goalkeeper Henderson and it shows exactly why Spurs boss Jose Mourinho wanted to bring him to North London in the summer.
It looked an odd signing on paper to bring in Hart given the fact his form has dropped in the past couple of years at Burnley and West Ham, but he’s been such a positive influence on the Spurs group so far and also has restored belief in his own game.
Mourinho is desperate to help Spurs end their 12-year wait without a trophy and he needed to bring some experience to his squad.
