Everton winger Theo Walcott left the Toffees on loan this summer and, judging by his latest comments, looks open to a permanent departure from Goodison Park.
The 31-year-old joined Everton from Arsenal for a fee of around £20million in January 2018 and has gone on to make 85 appearances for the Toffees.
However, he is into the last year of his Everton contract and only played 12 minutes of the Toffees’ first four Premier League games this season.
Walcott was allowed to rejoin Southampton, his former club, on loan this summer after it became clear that he would not be playing regular football at Goodison this term.
He has made one appearance for the Saints so far, playing 90 minutes in the Chelsea draw, having had to sit out their win over the Toffees as he was ineligible to feature against his parent club.
In conversation with the official Southampton website, the England international spoke highly of his return to the club where he came through the ranks.
He also hinted that he hopes his return to St Mary’s “can be a long-term thing” after praising manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and potentially building the foundations for a coaching career.
“The manager has pulled me to one side a few times and put me in a room to go through a lot of tactics, which is nice to see, just to get my coaching head on, because that’s something in the future I might want to look at,” said Walcott.
“It’s very interesting. I’m really enjoying my short time working with the manager at the moment and hopefully it can be a long-term thing.”
While Walcott may have become surplus to requirements at Everton, it looks as though quite a few Southampton fans would love him to stick around, as per the below social media reaction:
