Lucas Alario’s agent has told TNT Sports that his client could have left Bayer Leverkusen on loan in the summer to join Tottenham Hotspur but chose to remain – and has since been in lethal form for the Bundesliga side this season.
Alario, 28, has been on fire this season – netting five goals in seven games for the Bundesliga side, including a brace against Augsburg last weekend. The eight-time Argentina international scored 12 goals in 36 league and cup appearances.
The former River Plate ace has an excellent scoring rate at Leverkusen even prior to this season – scoring 41 goals in 105 games, as well as creating 13 efforts, since his £17million (ESPN) move to Leverkusen in the summer of 2022.
Speaking to TNT, Pedro Aldave confirmed that Alario could have left Leverkusen this summer despite the exit of Kai Havertz to Chelsea. He also stated that Tottenham could have completed a move for the Argentine on loan, but chose against a move.
“We had opportunities to go out on loan and he chose to stay,” Aldave said. “We had the chance to join Tottenham on loan who are a top side, but to watch the matches from the stands, it didn’t work for us.”
BGA’s view – Alario would have been an excellent addition
Instead, Tottenham signed Brazilian target man Carlos Vinicius on a loan-to-buy deal from Benfica after he scored 24 goals and created 13 more last season. He made an excellent debut against LASK – laying on two assists.
However, on Thursday, he struggled – being hooked at half-time as Spurs suffered a 1-0 loss to Royal Antwerp. While Vinicius is a good back-up and probably better than Spurs could have hoped for, Alario would have been even better.
