The Legendary Birds, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, are hiding somewhere in Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra DLC. While the return of these Pokémon might be exciting, they’re not too easy to track down.
Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres have new Galarian forms in Sword and Shield’s DLC. Articuno is Psychic/Flying type, Zapdos is Fighting/Flying, and Moltres is Dark/Flying.
As enticing as this may be for both longtime fans and newcomers to Pokémon, actually catching the Legendary Birds is easier said than done. First, explore Dyna Tree Hill in the Crown Tundra to release the birds into the wild.
How to catch Articuno in The Crown Tundra
To catch Articuno in Pokémon Sword and Shield, explore the Wild Area in the Crown Tundra, follow the bird until it creates Double Team illusions of itself, then pick the one that it subtly flapping its wings.
Articuno can usually be found at Snowslide Slope, although there are other places across the Crown Tundra where it can appear. Follow its shadow until it starts hovering in a fixed location and splits into three identical birds.
Watch carefully as these birds spin around – two are fake, and one is the real Articuno. The real one flaps its wings a little. Choose this one when they descend to the ground to trigger an encounter and a chance ot catch it.
How to catch Zapdos in The Crown Tundra
To catch Zapdos in Pokémon Sword and Shield, leave the Crown Tundra and head back to the Wild Area in the main Galar region from the original game. All you need to do is chase Zapdos until you catch up with it to trigger an encounter.
Unlike with Articuno in the Crown Tundra’s Wild Area, there’s no guessing game or duplicate Pokémon to worry about. Get on your bike and cycle after Zapdos for long enough, and you’ll catch it up – you can speed this up by cutting corner as it zigs and zags around the Wild Area.
All three of the Legendary Birds will be level 70 when you encounter them, so it’s worth making sure you have a strong team with you while attempting to catch them.
How to catch Moltres in The Crown Tundra
To catch Moltres in the new Crown Tundra DLC, you’ll need to head to the Isle of Armor. There the Pokémon will be flying laps of the island and you need to whistle to get it to land.
Unlike Articuno in the Crown Tundra’s Wild Area, you shouldn’t chase after Moltres, as it won’t slow down. You’re better off finding a place on the route it flies around the island, then wait until it flies directly over you before whistling by clicking the left analogue stick.
Moltres will then descend, and you’ll be able to catch it, completing your set.
