A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Matt Doherty’s performance as Spurs had to settle for a controversial draw with Newcastle United on Sunday.
Much of the talk surrounding the game centred on the decision to award the Magpies a late penalty. It was an incredibly harsh call with Eric Dier penalised for handball despite having his back to the play.
But there were certainly some positives for Jose Mourinho’s side. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg silenced plenty of his doubters with a superb showing.
And it would appear that several Tottenham fans felt that Doherty produced his best display yet following his summer switch to North London.
He looked to be a threat at both ends of the pitch. Whoscored.com shows that no player made more key passes than the Republic of Ireland international.
Meanwhile, no Spurs player won more aerial duels than Doherty either. It was a performance that arguably helped remind the Tottenham fans why Mourinho wanted to bring the 28-year-old to the club in the first place.
It was ultimately an incredibly frustrating and disappointing day for Spurs. But Doherty was amongst those to provide supporters with something to smile about at least.
Here is how some of the fans reacted to the defender’s display…
Ignoring the mayhem, was impressed with the performances of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Matt Doherty today.

Højbjerg was incredibly today. Ndombele was outrageously good when he came on and Doherty had his best game in a spurs shirt

Doherty clearly an improvement
Dave Sanchez played well, Winks great 1st half
Kane&Son as ever excellent.
Ndombele continues to look the player we want & need him to be.
Probably the best balanced we’ve looked under Jose
I’m just sad about Dele. #COYS

Joke of an end aside, Hojberg and Doherty did make a difference there which is encouraging, still hard to know if it was us playing well or Newcastle pure fodder , probably a bit of both – still need a centre half #coys
