Niels Nkounkou has told the Liverpool Echo of three Everton players who he says are a nightmare to defend against in training.
The left-back arrived at Goodison Park during the summer and could be in line for his first start against Salford in the Carabao Cup this evening.
He has named James Rodriguez, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and perhaps surprisingly Alex Iwobi when discussing players who are difficult to play against in training.
The youngster told the Liverpool Echo: “It’s difficult to defend against all the players but everyone is aware of the ability that James has.
“He does the unexpected and sometimes it’s difficult to predict what he is going to do next when you are trying to defend against him. He’s a tough opponent.
“Lots of them are difficult to defend against. Dominic (Calvert-Lewin) is skilful and comfortable on the ball.
“Alex Iwobi is another. There are a few who are tough to keep an eye on.”
Nkounkou is yet to play a game at senior level but tonight could be the night he gets his opportunity.
Carlo Ancelotti has taken great pride in allowing young talent to shine since arriving on Merseyside and that could benefit the defender.
Everton will chase European football this season but it seems unlike that will come at the expense of nurturing youngsters.
It’s perhaps no surprise that Rodriguez is picked as a tough opponent in training and Calvert-Lewin’s gangly frame seems makes him a nuisance too.
Iwobi, however, might surprise some people after a below-par maiden campaign after his £34 million transfer from Arsenal.
The 24-year-old needs a big campaign during 2020/21 following two goals and one assist from 29 appearances last season.
