The defending champions needed a late minute Derrick Nsibambi winner to halt celebrations by their rivals Vipers SC of winning the title  with a game left to the end of the Azam Uganda Premier League season.

At the St.Mary’s stadium in Kitende, the hosts walloped struggling Express FC by five goals to nil, thanks to Dan ‘Mzee’ Sserunkuuma’s stellar performance that saw him net three times as his team rolled over the fading Red Eagles.

Moses Waiswa and Duncan Sseninde added onto the score as the venoms raged like wild fire against the 2012 league champions to close in for their third league title.

Celebrations begun in Kitende at the end of the game after the stadium announcer declared that their closest rivals had drawn, but little did they know the result would later change.

KCCA keep Vipers waiting

At Lugogo, KCCA FC kept their rivals from Kitende in sight and waiting for the last day before being crowned champions when they beat BUL fc by two goals to one.

The Kasasiro boys broke the deadlock on 20 minutes through Nsibambi for the game to end one nil at half time but the visitors restored parity only five minutes to the end of the game.

However, in the added minutes Nsibambi was back it again heading home the second and winning goal to send the fans into frenzy.

Nsibambi’s second goal was so impactful that it struck hard the Vipers’ fans, players and staff whose party had started at Kitende following their maul against Express.

The Tuesday games leave Vipers still at the top of the league with 62 points, two ahead of rivals KCCA FC with a game to end the season.

The Lugogo based side will play Police FC at Namboole whereas Vipers will hosts UPDF at the St. Mary’s stadium on Friday in games to be played on the same day and the same time.

Any result less than a win for KCCA on Friday will mean they have automatically handed over the league title to Vipers even if they don’t kick a ball.

Meanwhile at the bottom faded giants Express FC continue to fight for life for Uganda’s top flight football in the second bottom position on only 28 points, the same number as Proline who are one position above .

Entebbe based Masavu FC are teetering at the rock bottom of the Azam Uganda Premier League with 26 points.

On the last day, it will be a battle for survival between Express and Masavu as both team will face each other to sum up the league.
