Shortly after the reading of the national budget for the Financial Year 2017\18, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced that the country has run short of ordinary passports in the statement which they issued on June 13th.

While addressing the matter, Jocob Siminyu the directorate of immigration and citizenship said that the shortage of ordinary passports is due to the impending government project of switching from readable to electronic passports.

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs has run out of ordinary passports due to the impending switch from machine readable passports to electronic passports “ Siminyu said.

He added that the few remaining passports will be issued to emergency cases like patients seeking treatment abroad, people going to conduct government business and to students who get foreign scholarships.

“People who are not in that category are going to wait because the stock the directorate currently has is enough only to cater for all the emergency cases for the next one month,” Simunyu said.
