The Frenchman revealed the snub to Barca in a bizarre documentary entitled‘The Decision’ aired on a pay-to-view channel in Spain.
The fly-on-the-wall style documentary showed him taking advice from his father, his wife and his sister as he mulled over the options of joining Barcelona or staying at Atletico.
Antoine Griezmann has revealed he will stay at Atletico Madrid next season
Griezmann announced it via Spanish TV channel Cero in a show that was called ‘The Decision’
The dragged out, nauseous nature of Griezmann’s announcement on Thursday angered many people on social media.
@TaintlessRed tweeted: ‘Griezmann’s look-at-me egotistical announcement is one of the most embarrassing things I can think of any player doing that wasn’t illegal.’
Others made jokes at the 27-year-old’s expense: ‘Glad Griezmann has sorted out his future. I’ve been worried sick all day.’
Even an account dedicated to cricket waded in, with @VillageCricket_ saying: ‘Going to create a feature length film to let the 3rd XI captain know if I’m available this weekend’
@BarcaWorldwide wrote: ‘Griezmann is the kind of guy who’d sit on a cactus just for attention’.
Jokes were made at Barcelona’s expense too after they missed out on another big signing following the failure to buy Marco Verratti last summer.
‘I hope you got a refund mate’, wrote @90thMin alongside a picture of a Barca fan with next season’s shirt and ‘Griezmann 7’ on the back.
Despite being booed by a section of them last month, Atletico fans seem pretty pleased with the news in the wake of the signing of Thomas Lemar and Jose Giminez’s new deal.
‘It’s a great time to be an Atletico fan’, wrote @ChocMilkSheikh.
@MrAubameyang added: ‘Gimenez signing a new 5 year deal, Griezmann staying and they’ve signed Lemar. MASSIVE week for Atleti.’
