Rangers are hopeful they can beat Spartak Moscow to the signing of Croatian defender Nikola Katic, Press Association Sport understands.
The 21-year-old NK Slaven Belupo centre back emerged as a target for new Gers boss Steven Gerrard over the weekend but he faces competition from Russia.
However, Ibrox sources say the club are confident they can meet Katic’s £1.7million valuation as they look to stiffen up a back line which conceded more goals than any other top six side last term.

Brighton defender Connor Goldson is also expected to arrive in Glasgow this week to complete a £3million switch.
Katic’s Belupo deal runs to 2021 and the player has already been capped once by Croatia.
Gerrard is determined to install a strong spine to his side and adding another imposing centre back would be key. Gers have already signed goalkeeper Allan McGregor as well as midfielders Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria.
Meanwhile, striker Joe Dodoo is closing in on a loan move to Blackpool.
