Six suspected robbers have been arrested by police flying squad in Bunyoro sub region.

They were arrested following public outcry on an increase in crime rates and suspicion that the group was masterminding robberies in the districts of Masindi, Kiryandongo and Hoima.

The arrested are identified as Moses Bazibu, 32, Isaac Monge, 25, Hakim Mudori, 22 and Billy Enock Waninga Muwata, 25, all residents of Mbale Municipality. Others are Yusufu Mafabi alias Ssekito, 19, and one minor, residents of Rubaga division in Kampala.

The group reportedly targeted mobile money agents. Their latest victim was Caroline Kinene, a mobile money agent operating in Upper Kahora division who was robbed of 9 million Shillings and mobile money float worth 3 million Shillings.

Police Albertine Region Public Relations Officer Julius Hakiza says the group members were trailed and arrested from Kiryandongo district. They were later transferred to Hoima Central Police Station.

Hakiza says that mobile money thefts have become rampant in Hoima. Some dealers have been issued with fake notes after sending money to recipients who immediately switch off the phones. Mobile Money errors cannot be reversed without the cooperation of the recipient.

He urges mobile money agents to increase their vigilance.

Police recovered 1.2 million Shillings from them and impounded their motor vehicle, a Toyota Premio registration number UAN 519T.
