Parliament passes the Local Government(Amendment)Bill, 2016

The House has passed the Local Government(Amendment)Bill, 2016 at Third Reading. .

The Committee on Public Service & Local Govt chaired by Hon. Magyezi  presented the report on the Bill this morning to the house for debate.

At the begining of the session, Hon speaker, Rebecca Kadaga implored the house to consider the citizens who want to elect their leaders. “The citizens have been waiting for an opportunity to elect their leaders so so consider them & the law”, Kadaga said

The Bill seeks to amend the Local Govt Act to cater for display of register for LC elections, time of campaigns & other matters.

Among other recommendation, the Committee  recommended that LC elections be conducted by lining up as secret ballot would be expensive.

The Committee also recommended that LC elections be held in the next 60days & not later than 15th March 2017.

The Speaker clarified that the LC Elections will be about parties and not individuals.
