Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze Bakireke has been rearrested. Nambooze was picked up last evening following President Museveni statements that Police bond should not be given to suspects accused of serious crimes like murder.
Nambooze had been briefly held by Police on Thursday morning. Nambooze was interrogated at the Police Special Investigations Unit in Kireka about statements she made in regard to the death of former Arua MP Ibrahim Abiriga on June 08, 2018.
Nambooze was charged with offensive communication and released after being given police bond. Her lawyers led by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago were however able to secure her bond later on grounds that she has a medical condition that requires her to be home.
President Museveni made the statements after the reading of the 2018/2019 national budget by Finance Minister Matia Kasaija at Serena Conference Centre on Thursday afternoon.
The budget reading was more significant than usual for the absence of almost all members of the opposition. Members of the opposition led by Winnie Kiiza decided to skip the budget reading in solidarity with MPs Betty Nambooze and Hassan Kaps Fungaroo.
Speaking at MP Abiriga’s home and again at his burial in Arua, President Museveni claimed that the former Arua MP may have been shot dead because of his vocal support for National Resistance Movement (NRM) programs. Abiriga came to national attention as the lead agitator for the lifting of presidential age-limits in the constitution that would enable President Museveni to run for the office again in 2016. The amendment was passed in 2017.
