Three Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) medical officers have been deployed to temporarily manage Nakawuka Health Centre 3 in Wakiso district following the suspension of health workers from the facility.

The UPDF medics together with six other medical staff from within the district were deployed on Friday evening and are expected to stay until a final solution on the fate of the health facility is established.

Deputy UPDF spokesperson Major Henry Obbo says the deployment is timely adding that the army now has capacity to intervene in such situations.

President Yoweri Museveni this week ordered the suspension of nine health workers after he made an impromptu visit to Nakawuka Health Centre on Wednesday.

Residents who use the facility had reportedly cited poor work attitude and lack of professionalism by the health workers.

Wakiso district health officer Dr Emmanuel Mukisa says the manpower deployed at the health facility is a temporary measure to ensure it functions.

Health minister Dr Ruth Aceng has meanwhile stated that the health workers will undergo a disciplinary measure which will determine if they are relieved of their duties, transferred or reinstated.
