A front three of Gary Lineker, Paolo Rossi and Alan Shearer at their peak of their careers would have any defence quaking in their boots.

While they may never have combined on the pitch, however, the three strikers have come together for a selfie in Russia.

Lineker and Shearer are out in Moscow as pundits for the BBC‘s World Cup coverage, and grabbed a selfie with Rossi, who fired Italy to win the 1982 edition of the tournament.

Striker turned TV presenter Lineker posted the picture to his Instagram account, captioned: ‘Three old strikers, two World Cup golden boots, one Euros golden boot.’

This refers to the fact that all three forwards were top scorers at international tournaments – Rossi in 1982, Lineker at the 1986 World Cup, and Shearer at Euro 96.

Rossi – after a slow start in Spain having been banned for two years amid a betting scandal – eventually scored six goals, including a hat-trick in Italy’s 3-2 quarter final win over Brazil and the opener in a 3-1 victory over West Germany in the final.

Four years later, Lineker was the leading scorer in Mexico, also with six including a hat-trick, against Poland in the group stage.

Shearer meanwhile led the scoring charts for England at their home European Championships, with five goals in as many matches before their semi-final exit.
