John Paul Byagamy, the Lira District Laboratory Focal point person has gone into hiding following the recovery of stolen government medical equipment and testing kits from his private facility. Byagamy is the proprietor of ADC Diagnostic Centre, which is about 100 meters from Lira Main Hospital.

This morning, Police officers led by Ezra Tugume, the Lira District Police Commander raided the facility and impounded a microscope valued at Shillings 25 million, hemoglobin analyzer, manual white blood cell count machine, rapid malaria and HIV/AIDS test strips valued at Shillings 15 million.

Some of the medical equipment were part of those delivered by the Health Ministry to the district to boost HIV and Hepatitis be testing. Ezra Tugume, the Lira District Police Commander, says they raided the Diagnostic Center from a tip off by concerned residents who saw government equipment at the facility.

According to Tugume, they want Byagamy to explain the circumstances under, which government equipment and testing kits ended up in his private facility. Dr. Patrick Butchan Ocen, the Lira District Health Officer, says they have been receiving various reports on the theft of government property in the health department.

He wonders how the impounded equipment reached ADC diagnostic since it was delivered directly to the beneficiary health facilities. Byagamy has not yet commented as he couldn’t be reached by our reporter by the time of filing this story.
