Two journalists in Iganga district are nursing injuries after being assaulted by the chief body guard of Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope, the Kyabanzinga of Busoga kingdom. They are Fredrick Soma, a reporter of Bukedde Television and his red pepper counterpart Solomon Hamala.

The duo was assaulted by Lieutenant John Mugoya, the head of the Kyabazinga’s security during his tour in Iganga district over the weekend.  It all started when the journalists tried to cover Kyabazinga’s address to students of Iganga High School. Mugoya intervened and tried to block the journalists from covering the event in vain.

As a result, he started assaulting the journalists. It took the intervention of Nassibu Nditta, the Iganga District Police Commander and other district officials to restrain the soldier from doing more harm to the journalists. Other journalists who were also covering the event wondered why the officer was demanding for their accreditation cards yet this hasn’t been the case at other events.

James Mubi, the Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson, says investigations into the matter are ongoing. According to Mubi, they have summoned witnesses to record a statement about the incident. Hamala and Soma have filed a case of assault against Mugoya at Iganga Central Police Station vide police file number SD-50-23-07-16.
