Jack Wilshere appeared to break rank on Thursday night by taking to social media to criticise England manager Gareth Southgate for axing him from England’s World Cup squad.

The Arsenal midfielder seemed to take a dig at Southgate for his decision to omit him from the 23-man squad for Russia.

Southgate phoned Wilshere on Tuesday to confirm he wasn’t part of his plans for the World Cup. And after initially joking that he would join a lads’ holiday in Zante this summer instead, the midfielder returned to Twitter to release a statement.

‘Think its about time I had my say…,’ Wilshere tweeted. ‘It goes without saying that I’m naturally incredibly disappointed to have been left out of the England squad for the World Cup.

‘I’ve felt fit, sharp and strong all season and believe I should be in the squad! And given the chance I could have made a real impact.

‘However, I have to respect the manager’s decision and would like to wish the whole squad all the very best for the tournament. I will always be an England fan and will be supporting the boys with the rest of the nation.’

Shortly after his omission, Wilshere was invited to join lads’ holiday in by Twitter user Will Palacios and jokingly took up the offer.

And he later acknowledged a meme which showed a picture of himself and Joe Hart, who has also been omitted, in a swimming pool with the caption: ‘Don’t listen to them Jack, we’re good footballers.’

The 26-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, enjoyed an impressive second half to the season for Arsenal after fighting his way back to full fitness.

But Southgate refused to call upon Wilshere during the World Cup qualifying campaign and his last appearance remains the chastening Euro-2016 defeat by Iceland.
