The body of an 18-year-old student was discovered in a swamp by a Muslim cleric who had gone to fetch water on Friday in what police highly suspect as a result of suicide.
The deceased, Fatuma Musubika, a senior two student at Buckley Secondary School located in Nawanzu village, Nakigo sub county Iganga district had reportedly been asked to shave off her hair.
The police spokesman Busoga east, James Mubi said they highly suspect the deceased could have committed suicide after being asked to shave off her hair both from school and home.
It is alleged that she returned home after being chased away from school over a “funny” hair cut which made her look like she was a gang star.
According to her mother Shamina Mutesi, her daughter went away in protest after being told to cut off her hair on Monday and never returned.
Mutesi said she went to school to inquire the whereabouts of her daughter and was told that she had been chased away because of the funny haircut.
She said the deceased had of recent made friendship with a group of girls who frequently attend night clubs and engaged in drinking crude Waragi and she believes they could have influenced her change her behavoiurs.
“My daughter has been a well behaved girl, it is only of recent that she changed after picking up friendship with a group of six girls in the area” she said.
The LCI vice chairman, Nawanzu village, Juma Kyobwika said majority of youths in the area have resorted to drinking or smoking marijuana which has contributed to the increasing cases of immorality in the area.
Efforts to seek a comment from the director of the school, Charles Waiswa proved futile as his phones were switched off by press time and was reportedly out of the district.
When contacted for a comment, the school’s headteacher, Juilus Lubambo declined to comment about the issue claiming it’s a sensitive matter.
Mubi urged parents to always counsel their children while at an early age avoid similar incidents.
