Police have slapped fresh charges of disobeying lawful orders against Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change-FDC presidential candidate. Heavily armed police intercepted Besigye today while leading a procession of his supporters along Kampala-Entebbe highway shortly after the Makindye Magistrate’s court dismissed similar charges against him citing failure by the state to produce witnesses to pin him.

He was dragged to Jinja Road police station and locked up with his driver, Fred Kato. Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson, says Besigye was picked up when he disobeyed lawful orders from a traffic officer not to lead a procession through the city center in vain. He says that now that Besigye has resumed the defiance campaign, Police will apply to court to cancel his bail.

Besigye was released on bail from Luzira maximum prison where he had spent over two months on treason charges.  According to Onyango, during his release last week, High court ordered Besigye not to involve himself in the defiance campaign until his case is concluded. Shortly after the arrest of Besigye, a number of FDC party officials led by Geoffrey Ekanya and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago visited him at Jinja road police station.

According to Lukwago, Besigye was erroneously picked up, saying that after appearing at Makindye court he told him he was heading to the bank to perform some transactions. He wondered how Besigye can access banking services, if Police doesn’t want him to go through the city center where most of the banks are found.

Lukwago asked the police leadership to give Besigye some space to operate freely, saying it is appears he is being witch hunted by some officers.  This is the sixth time Besigye is being picked since this year begun.
