Atletico Madrid captain Gabi was ready to eat his words after his side lifted the Europa League trophy on Wednesday night, a tournament he referred to as a ‘piece of s*** earlier this season.

The Spaniard scored his side’s third after two goals from Antoine Griezmann as Atletico ran out 3-0 winners against Marseille in Lyon the final of Europe’s second-tier competition.

And as Gabi celebrated during the trophy presentation it was hard not to forget what the 34-year-old had said when his team’s Champions League campaign was crumbling back in October.

‘Today I would say it (the Europa League) is a piece of s***,’ Gabi told reporters after Los Rojiblancos were held to a 1-1 draw by Qarabag to put them on the brink of elimination at the group stage.

‘But the Europa League has given me a lot, and if we have to play it, we will play to win it.

The team duly went on to drop into the Europa League after Roma and Chelsea qualified from Group C but having gone on to win it, Gabi was much more humble.

‘Now I have to eat my words,’ he said in quotes reported by AS . ‘It was a very difficult moment for everyone.’

The midfielder also reiterated his hope that star striker Griezmann will remain at the club with the Frenchman strongly linked with a move to Barcelona this summer.

‘He has shown that he is focused on Atletico,’ Gabi continued. ‘I hope he stays.
