Arsenal have asked about Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos amid concerns over their pursuit of Freiburg’s Caglar Soyuncu.
Mikel Arteta is likely to have a limited budget to work with once he is appointed manager following Arsenal’s expenditure in January and Freiburg’s £35m asking price for Soyuncu is a concern.
Sokratis is well known to Sven Mislintat of course, Arsenal’s head of recruitment, and would cost considerably less at around £17.5m.

Arsenal need a centre-back with Laurent Koscielny out for six months and Per Mertesacker taking up a coaching role.
Arsene Wenger blooded January signing Konstantinos Mavropanos, a Greece U21 international, last season and he could benefit from the experience of his compatriot.
Sportsmail revealed Arsenal’s interest in Soyuncu back in March but so far their valuation differs from that of Freiburg.
