Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin issued Antoine Griezmann with an ultimatum after their Europa League triumph – become a club legend or fade into obscurity elsewhere.

French striker Griezmann, who is likely to join Barcelona this summer, scored twice in Atletico’s final win over Marseille in Lyon on Wednesday night.

After the match, manager Diego Simeone appeared to give Griezmann his blessing to join the La Liga champions, but Gil Marin had other ideas.

He told Cadena SER: ‘It will depend on his feelings more than anything else.

‘If he wants to make history at Atletico Madrid where everything revolves around him, or go to a club where he will never enter history.’

Griezmann, 27, has scored 29 goals and contributed 15 assists during an outstanding season as he won the first major trophy of his four-year career at Atletico.

It proved a comfortable night for Atletico, for whom Gabi scored a late third following Griezmann’s two goals, and they lifted the Europa League for the third time.

Gil Marin added: ‘If he decides that he does not want to continue with us, we have to respect his decision.

‘I am not optimistic or pessimistic. I do not know what will happen, it is not a decision for him to say after the final.’

However, Gil Marin isn’t impressed by Barcelona’s pursuit of Griezmann and he has previously accused them of ‘an absolute lack of respect’ as they try and bring him to the Nou Camp.
