Flu (influenza) or common cold is often caused by the influenza virus, which is inhaled from small contaminated aerosols. It attacks the airway causing symptoms like nasal congestion, nasal discharge, and fever and in some cases cough. Drugs given are to treat symptoms; otherwise medicines used to eliminate the virus are not readily available. However, here are some home remedies that can help relieve flu symptoms

Green tea

2-3 cups of green tea per day are often recommended. If you do come down with unbearable cold or flu symptoms, consider 3-4 cups of green tea per day.

Ginger

Steep several slices of fresh ginger root in hot water and sip for an extra health boost or to soothe a cough or scratchy throat. It also helps in sore throat

Honey

It’s known to boost the immune system and also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties; if you do develop a sore or scratchy throat, honey will soothe and help heal. Use it in your tea, coffee, plain hot water or by itself. You can even gargle with honey (and lemon) in salt water when the mixture is at room temperature.

Garlic:

This contains the immune-boosting compound allicin, also known to relieve cold and flu symptoms. Applying crushed garlic along with honey is also very effective in treating a sinus (cavities in bone adjacent to the nasal passages) and flu infection as it unclogs the sinus cavities while removing the bacteria. Garlic is an excellent anti-bacterial and helps in quickly healing the infection.

Chop or crush 1-2garlic gloves of fresh garlic and “steep” them in hot water; then, drink it like a tea

Steam

Boil a pot of water on the stove and then slowly breathe in the steam as you cover your whole face, nose, cheeks and eyes in steam. Be careful as steam can cause burns. If the steam makes your nasal passages burn, pull your head back slightly and breathe in more slowly. Do this when you experience a lot of nasal congestion
